One of the busiest rock ‘n roll bands on the planet jets in tomorrow night for their eagerly looked forward to concert at Water’s Edge on Tuesday, November 30.
Smokie completes a hectic 18-date sell-out tour of Australia in Sydney tonight before boarding a flight to Colombo tomorrow, via Singapore.
Selling out 18 shows is no mean feat, considering the quintet visits Down Under every couple of years! But tickets for the performances, spread across the vast terrains of Western Australia, Northern Territory, Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria, in venues with a minimum capacity of 2,500 seats each, were snapped up within days of going on sale several months ago.
Only at Sydney’s Enmore Theatre were there a few tickets to be disposed of late last week!
Smokie, it appears, is a glutton for punishment. For, immediately after their show in Colombo the band races off to Katunayake to catch a flight home - in and around Yorkshire in the UK - before heading off two days later to cities across Europe on yet another gruelling tour!
While they’re guaranteed to belt out their timeless classics like Livin’ Next Door To Alice, Mexican Girl, Lay Back In The Arms Of Someone, A Little Town Flirt, O Carol and so on, Mike Craft (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Mick McConnell (lead guitar, vocals), Terry Uttley (a founding member on bass, vocals), Steve Pinnell (drums) and Martin Bullard (keyboards), are also renowned for spontaneously adding to their repertoire on the night a few surprises - hits that made some of their contemporaries the mega stars that they are today!
Besides, these five men have been together for a decade and a half! They certainly know how to put on a quality show!
They were to perform in Colombo exactly five years ago, but the civil unrest at the time put paid to it, followed by another window of opportunity just two years ago. That also fell through for the same reasons.
Now that the concert is finally happening, here’s a chance for local die-hards to enjoy some quality rock ‘n roll! A chance certainly not to be missed!
The concert is presented by Water’s Edge, and is sponsored by Dialog, Singer Sri Lanka and LOLC. The Sunday Times and Daily Mirror are the Print Media Partners while YES FM Channel 1 MTV are Electronic Media Partners. Cinnamon Lakeside is the official hotel. |
