Beach volleyball teams impress in Oman

After the ‘A’ team registered a hard fought win over Taipei on Friday afternoon the ‘B’ team followed suit by winning their match in straight sets in the Beach Volleyball Games in Oman yesterday. The scores were 21/7, 21/5 having played after 8 p.m. on Friday.

The ‘A’ team is in a tough group with Oman and Lebanon and in another group match Lebanon surprised the host nation Oman who was also a tough side in this tournament. Sri Lanka will have to win against Oman and Lebanon if they wish to qualify to the finals.

The beach volleyball teams had a rest day yesterday and will be in action today. Sri Lanka's swimmers finished off badly when the two men and two women swimmers failed to impress in the ten kilometer marathon held at the Barr Al Jissa, Qantab beach yesterday.

Out of 18 men competitors Sri Lanka's two men finished in 12 and 13 positions respectively as China's Zu Lijun finished first in one hour, 55 minutes and 12.1 seconds. He finished ahead of defending champion Mohammad Saleh of Syria who won the 5 kilometer marathon two days ago.Sahan Rupasinghe finished 12th in a time of 2 hours, 25 minutes and 00.7 seconds while Kanishka Fernando finished 13th in a time of 2 hours, 25 minutes and 36 seconds.

The two Sri Lankan girls Suneetha Wijeratne and Methma Jayawardena did not finish the race despite being among the front runners early in the race. The sea was very calm and looked more like a large swimming pool. The Arabian Sea waters were cupped among the rocky surrounding that was quite scenic and pleasant to the eyes.The swimming team has finished their events and will return to the country on Monday morning.

The beach volleyball teams had a rest day yesterday and will be in action today.
