Gateway takes over Achievers as their principal Community Service Project

Gateway Group is to take over 'Achievers', a school for children with learning differences situated in Colombo 5. From January 2011, Gateway will take over the management of the school as their principal CSR project. 'Achievers' was founded in May 2002 by a concerned group of parents and professionals who formed the Association for Individuals with Learning Differences (A.I.L.D) as a non-profit organization. Gateway intends to develop the organization further, building on the values and ethos instilled in 'Achievers' by the founders.

Dr. Harsha Alles, Director of Gateway Group, states that Gateway is pleased to be part of the Achievers' school as this is a new area in education for the Group. He further states in the past, Gateway College has had a number of requests to accommodate students with learning disabilities but they were reluctantly declined as the Management was of the view that venturing into such a specialist area required professional as well as institutional expertise. However, now with the experience and dedication of the staff of 'Achievers' and the educational management expertise of Gateway, they would be able to provide necessary facilities to this important segment of the student community in a structured manner.

"If they cannot learn the way they are taught, teach them the way they can learn". This is the philosophy followed by 'Achievers'. The focus of the school is placed on the individual strengths of the child and the children work in an extremely friendly and encouraging environment where they have one to one interaction with the teachers. Among the students that 'Achievers' support are children with Dyslexia, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorders (ADHD), Autism, etc..

For management purposes, 'Achievers' will be placed as a division of Gateway College, Colombo 4, under the guidance of its consultant Mrs. Noreen Welikala. Mrs. Welikala, a founder Principal of a leading International School in Colombo counts over five decades of experience in education. Gateway wishes to improve the services provided by 'Achievers' by expanding and improving the current facilities to enhance the multi sensory structured learning of the students and to provide more opportunities to students who require such services.

The gifted students of 'Achievers' with the support of their teachers and the head of the school Mrs. Theekshana Samaraweera recently had their annual concert at the Russian Cultural Centre. All students of the school took part in the performance of song and dance. There were honorary guest performances by Mr. Ronnie Leach and Ms. Corrine Almeida to raise the spirits of the students. The overall performance of the students gave light to the hard work and the commitment of the dedicated team of teachers.
