Wide legal powers for Namal’s movement

By Chandani Kirinde

The Government has moved to provide legal status to Tharunyata Hetak, a youth organisation led by Hambantota District parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa.

A bill presented in Parliament by Social Services Minister Felix Perera seeks to empower the organisation to "borrow or raise money" with or without security. It will allow the group to receive or collect grants and legally obtain movable and immovable property. One of the declared objectives of Tharunayata Hetak is to work towards creating a tobacco, alcohol and drug free society by conducting awareness programmes.

It also wants to foster and promote "mutual understanding and a spirit of national consciousness, goodwill and friendship among the citizens of Sri Lanka. It will also assist youth financially or otherwise to develop their personal skills and aptitude.

The bill states that the management, control and administration of its affairs will be carried out by a committee of management consisting of at least five persons. The organisation also plans to assist students who prepare for government examinations by conducting lectures, seminars and study tours as well as grant scholarships to students who are in the secondary and tertiary stages of their education.
