Your tax rupees at work

Some of the City roads are veritable death traps for pedestrians but the Colombo Municipal Council seems to be turning a blind eye. The Sunday Times cameraman Nilan Maligaspe took these pictures of where live wires and ditches along the roads pose a hazard.

They say that live electricity wires was the result of either the Ceylon Electricity Board or the Lanka Electricity Company repeatedly carrying out repair work. Similarly, they say Road Development Authority personnel remove concrete lids for repairs but do not replace them properly.

Both motor vehicles and even pedestrians could fall in to them, they said. The other agency responsible, they say, are those from the Water supply and Drainage Board.

A slogan placed in several sectors of the City by the CMC says "Your Tax Rupees at Work". However , for some pedestrians and motorists, the hazards are becoming a nightmare and is taxing their patience.
