The football game

From an overseas reader
By Ravinshi Vithanage (7 years), Iskandar School, Male

One day Ken and Peter were playing football in the field. They were playing happily. Ken kicked the ball hard. It went flying over the fence.

The boys ran up to the fence to see where the ball went. They saw it falling into the trailer of a pickup. The pickup disappeared in a cloud of dust. The pickup driver did not know anything and drove along the dusty roads.

Peter scolded Ken for kicking the ball so hard. There was nothing to do, so they went home sadly. When Peter went home he saw his football. The ball had gone home before him. The pickup driver had been Peter’s father. He was happy again.

Friend, best friend and friendship

By Binaramali Abeysiriwardhana (Grade 10), Dharmasoka College, Ambalangoda

A friend is a partner and a helper. When we work in society we meet people and make friends day by day. But we have a habit to choose one friend among them and name him as our ‘best friend’. He is the best among our friends and we have a special connection with him.

The connection between friends is called friendship. It is a strong and good understanding between friends and it is a pleasure found in companionship also. According to my thinking friendship is an infant that grows strong with love and understanding. It depends on sharing and caring.

We must be clever to understand the real friends because all are not friends as we think. So we must keep in mind that ‘a friend in need is a friend indeed’.

Watching the night sky

By Kamashi Minodya (14 years), Nishshanka C.C., Badalkumbura

Different people have different hobbies. Among them watching the night sky is very important and
special because it gives us many things like knowledge, fun and entertainment.

The instrument that helps us to watch the sky is the telescope. By using the telescope we can watch the objects in the sky very closely. The person who introduced the telescope is Italian scientist Gallelio Galili.
Before watching the sky we need to consider some things. We need to select a day close to new moon day, be prepared for sudden changes of weather, keep a notebook and a pen to write down important things and keep star maps near.

When we are watching the night sky, we can observe many other objects. Also we can watch the night sky by visiting a special place. It is the planetarium. It is situated in Colombo. There is a special
instrument called universal projector at the planetarium.

By searching the website 'www.starynight.com' we can watch the night sky and find details about it. In my view, watching the night sky is a very useful hobby.

Back to school

By Kavya Ekanayaka (Grade 5), Mahamaya B.V., Kandy

I am a grade five student of Mahamaya B.V. Now I am in a new class. My class teacher is Miss Koshila. We have 48 children in our class. Our class is in the top storey. We can see the Kandy lake from there. It’s a beautiful scene. We can enjoy the environment while doing the lessons.

I think all the children in our class are our friends. We help each other. We have a dancing period. I like it. It’s my hobby. Now we have to study hard because this year we have to sit for the scholarship exam.

Importance of reading

By Chathil Kumara (10 years), Republican Int. School, Nuwara Eliya

Reading is an important habit. It is a good way of gaining knowledge and spending our leisure
usefully. There are books, magazines and newspapers for us to read. By reading, we can know about kings, inventors, good habits and many more things.

A person who reads often is like a mobile bank of knowledge. He acts as a resourceful person to society and also he does not do any harm to society. A person who does not read is not a complete man. So as
children we also must cultivate the habit of reading.
