Sri Lanka is in the midst of re-building the country and is taking steps to provide prosperity to its youth and society at large. In keeping with the nation's ideals for progress, Royal College along with the Royal College Union which has been in the forefront of fostering peace and community service has taken the lead in yet another initiative, to provide the youth of the North with essential school supplies that will enable them to start reaping the fruits of peace.
With the aim of building a bridge of peace, a group of Royalists young and old, rallied under the Blue and Gold flag, and set off on a mission to Kulmankal Roman Catholic School in Jaffna, with gifts for 200 school children to enhance their school life in a peaceful environment.
Initiated on the request of Major General Ramanayake, a past Royalist posted in Jaffna, to befriend the boys and girls of this selected school, the Principal of Royal College, Mr. Upali Gunasekera, readily agreed to accede to this special request.
The Royal College Union joined forces with Royal College and collected essential school supplies, such as books, uniform material and sporting equipment to the value of one million Sri Lankan rupees.
Representatives from Royal College included Mr. M. Kanapathipillai, Mr. Y.M. Jayasooriya, and students of the Buddhist Society, while the Royal College Union was represented by Mr. Mahesh Nanayakkara, Mr. Harshana Adhikari, and Mr. Ajith Rajapakse.
At a simple ceremony in Jaffna the gifts were donated, which resulted in life-long friendships being established, which no doubt help in strengthening the initiatives in furthering peace, reconciliation, and harmony. |
