Girl guides: Showing the way to being one family

By Shalomi Daniel

The branch for the differently abled Girl Guides formerly known as the Branch for the Handicapped of the Sri Lanka Girl Guides Association (SLGGA) was begun as far back as 1924. Their aim is to offer opportunities and recognition to differently abled guides making them a part of the mainstream Girl Guides movement and society in general.

“It is empathy and not sympathy that they want,” explains Marlyn Dissanayaka, Director of the Differently Abled Branch of the Sri Lanka Girl Guides Association, a group that strives to make the world a better and friendlier place for the differently abled.

The girls are sight and hearing Impaired, have Down’s Syndrome, are slow learners or are mentally impaired. From various schools and institutions, they become members of the worldwide family of the Girl Guides and Girl Scout Movement. Wearing the same uniform and enjoying activities similar to those the other guides do, gives them immense joy and a sense of self-worth. Equally, the other guides are exposed to the talents and potential of the differently abled.

“Guiding for the differently abled children does not require a special programme,” adds Ms Dissanayaka explaining that it only requires a modifying of the usual programme.

‘Fun Days’ and Camps are held in alternate years for the differently abled. Years ago a generous benefactor left a legacy which was what supported the differently abled branch. However, the funds are now depleted. At present there are nine institutions catering for differently abled girls which have guide companies in Sri Lanka and they rely on the (SLGGA) for their training etc.

Recently, the SLGGA was assessed by members of the Asia Pacific Regional Committee, (this happens every three years) and the differently abled children performed for the committee who were highly impressed and happy with the work being done by the SLGGA. The SLGGA received funding to build up Guide companies for differently abled children in the North and East and a training session was held for potential guiders to start and conduct guide companies in the East.

Getting ready for Intl camp

An international camp was held for the differently abled in South Korea a few years ago. Six girls and two guiders attended the camp from Sri Lanka and now the SLGGA is hosting a similar camp in Sri Lanka in August to give their differently abled guides some international exposure. The camp is being organized on behalf of the hearing impaired, sight impaired, Down syndrome and slow learners.

The majority of differently abled girl guides in Sri Lanka might never get an opportunity to travel abroad, and this camp would give them a golden opportunity to meet their sister guides around the world. There would also be a workshop for the leaders accompanying the participants as well.

However, facing a serious lack of funds, the SLGGA appeals to the public to support them to make this dream a reality. “It would indeed be a worthy cause,” emphasizes Ms Dissanayaka. Around 100 full time campers from Sri Lanka and abroad- and other day visitors are expected. The estimated budget is Rs 1.5 million. Those who wish to could donate money or sponsor a particular need such as food etc.

Anyone interested in volunteering to help organise the events too could contact the SLGGA at 10 Marcus Fernando Mawatha Colombo 7 or call them at +94-11-2695720. They can also be reached at slgga@dynaweb.lk or bdslgga@gmail.com

“You are very special”, a concert of music and dance presented by the differently abled branch of the SLGGA will be held at the Galle Face Hotel on April 5 at 6.30 p.m. Tickets priced at Rs. 1000 and Rs. 750 will be available at the Girl Guide Headquarters at No.10 Sir Marcus Fernando Mawatha, Colombo 7.
