The first of a series of chamber music concerts, the "Earle de Fonseka Chamber Music Concert Series", presented by the Symphony Orchestra of Sri Lanka (SOSL) on behalf of the Dr. Earle de Fonseka Trust, will be held on April 5, at the Lionel Wendt Theatre.
The major work in the programme will be Dvorak's string serenade. Written in 1875 at a time when the composer was free of all worry and stress, the serenade recalls the divertimento genre of the previous century.
It is music for the common man, for listening at leisure, and probably the earliest of the composer's output for this purpose. He has scored the work skilfully to bring out a variegated palette of string colours.
The string ensemble will also perform a delightful work by Mozart, the Divertimento in B flat major, to end the concert.
In between the two string works will be the rich and varied sound of a wind quintet (flute, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon), performing another Divertimento in B flat major, the one composed by Haydn which contains the famous "St. Anthoni Chorale" as the slow movement.
Dr. Earle de Fonseka was an iconic figure in the field of western classical music in Sri Lanka in the 20th century, and a major influence on the generation of senior musicians in the SOSL today. While he was best known as the conductor of the SOSL for over 40 years, he was also a gifted pianist and violinist who was passionate about chamber music.
This concert series is being promoted by the Dr. Earle de Fonseka trust as a fitting memorial to a great musician of Sri Lanka.
Tickets for the concert are available at the Lionel Wendt Theatre office. |
