Do you recall these memories today, Kumar ?

I often enjoy watching Kumar de Silva conducting the Talk Show Celeb Chat. My mind instantly goes back to those nostalgic days at All Saints’ B.V. Borella where both Kumar’s mother Manel and I were members of the Teaching Staff. Kumar, then a primary school kid at Wesley, off at twelve noon, would spend his time waiting for his mother in our then very small Staff room.

Being the naughty kid that he was at that time, he would often play embarrassing tricks on us staff members. It was not rare for us to find all sorts of odd objects in our hand-bags and carrybags. Balls of coir-rope, bottle lids, old dusters etc. would pop out when we dipped into them to get our purses, money or whatever it was we needed on the way home. I remember once, sitting in the train on my way to Moratuwa, putting my hand in to get my season ticket for the checkers when out fell a ball of crushed old newspaper. Needless to say, he was aided and abetted by our then Art Teacher, Rani, without whose contrivance he could never have managed his pranks.

Briget Halpe waxes eloquent on ‘Celeb Chat’

She spent more than four hours on the road coming all the way from home in Anniewatte off Kandy … direct into make-up room … a quick touch up … mix and match lipsticks et al … and Briget Halpe was ready to fire even before the lights were switched on.

An indefatiguable explosion of energy, Briget Halpe hits a neat 75 in October this year but hardly looks it. Listen to her talk about her abiding passion for music … her life with her famous husband (and incidentally, her former lecturer at the University of Peradeniya) the legendary Prof. Ashley Halpe … the pride she takes in her offspring Guy, Hasinee and Aparna … the Kandy Music Society … the Peradeniya Singers … and in fact everythinthat goes to make the multi-dimensional Briget Halpe.
Join host Kumar de Silva for all this and more at 9.30 pm on Monday, 11 April on CSN. The repeat telecast will be on Tuesday, 12 April at 8.00 am.
