No water to cool yourself

The National Water Supply and Drainage Board yesterday requested the people to use water sparingly because of a possible drought in the coming weeks. Water Board Working Director Nimal Piyaratne said because of the extreme heat this month, water consumption may be heavier than usual.

“People who do not have overhead water tanks face difficulties as the water supply gets disrupted during daytime due to high consumption,” he said. Mr. Piyaratne said that in Colombo, the highest water consumption had been reported in the Rajagiriya and Kolonnawa areas. He made a special request to the people in these areas to reduce water consumption.

Meanwhile the Meteorological Department said the extreme heat conditions would continue during the National New Year period though some thunder showers could be expected island wide.
