The facility to lodge a complaint to the Police via a text message will be introduced next month, Inspector General Mahinda Balasuriya said.
He said that upon receiving a complaint the respective area Senior Superintendent of Police will be informed while the complainant would be informed of the action being taken.
“Since millions of people use mobile phones, we believe this is one of the fastest ways of complaining to the Police about an incident,” IGP said.
He said that complaint via SMS would be legally accepted as the initial complaint. “People will be able not only to lodge complaints on crime, but also send messages regarding traffic accidents and traffic congestions and even suspicious persons in the area,” he said.
The Police Chief said he was also warning the people not to make false complaints via SMS and action would be taken against such people.
He said the phone number to which an SMS could be sent would be announced soon and the service would be available 24 hours a day. |
