Heritage and Traditions at Nuga Gama

The second workshop at Nuga Gama, Cinnamon Grand for Funday Times Club members was held on April 30, 2011. Thirty kids of the age group 13 – 16 participated.

After registration and a welcome drink, the members were taken on a tour of Nuga Gama by Gamini, the village headman. This was followed by an educative talk on Sri Lanka’s heritage, by Dr. Pandula Endagama, a national Anthropologist.

The members were then divided into three teams and enjoyed a word hunt game ‘Hodiya’. They then gathered round the ‘Kussiya,’ where the Nuga Gama chefs told them the tales of how the yam ‘’Bathala’ and the local dessert ‘Vellavahum’ derived their names. They were treated to a demonstration of the preparation of ‘Vellavahum’ followed by tasting.

Finally the members enjoyed an array of traditional kiribath, sambols and local sweetmeats, set out by
Chef Ronnie. Prizes were presented to the winning team of ‘Hodiya’ and chocolates and bookmarks were distributed to all the participants with the compliments of Cinnamon Grand.
