Madavil salutes soldiers who ensured victory against the LTTE

A War Heroes' Day commemorating the second anniversary of the military victory over the LTTE was held yesterday at Madavil, an area close to where the final battle took place in the Mullaitivu district.

The event was attended by Northern Province Governor Major General (retd) G.A. Chandrasiri, Wanni Security Forces Commander Major General Sumeda Perera, Mullaitivu Security Forces Commander Major General B. Mark and Jaffna Security Forces Commander Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe.

Deputy Chairman of Committees in Parliament Murugesu Chandrakumar was among those present. Soldiers and officers who were involved in the final battle including those who sustained injures were among those present at an event that saw the participation of schoolchildren and civilians too.
A cultural show added colour to the event.

Maj Gen (Retd) Chandrasiri said the government has launched a development programme in the north to raise the living standards of the people.

Mr. Chandrakumar said that a number of civilians were killed during the confrontations and they too should be remembered as those who sacrificed their lives to achieve victory over the LTTE.
