My trip to Sigiriya
By Shakya Perera (Year 2),
Gateway Int. College, Kandy
When I got my school vacation in April, we planned to visit Sigiriya. On Sunday May 1, in the morning, we went to Sigiriya with my grandparents and one of my father’s friends.
We reached Sigiriya at about 10 a.m.
It’s a huge rock fortress built by King Kashyapa. We climbed to the top to see the king’s
palace. There are a lot of remains like
water gardens, ponds, paintings. It’s a very
beautiful and attractive place.
Many tourists and local people come to see this. After that, we had our lunch and came to our house. It’s an unforgettable day of my life.
My hobby

Girls’ College, Kandy
My hobby is
collecting stamps. I love collecting stamps. I have a lot of country stamps such as Sri Lanka, Qatar, Australia, India and the United Kingdom. I have
200 stamps.
I have a Chinese stamp album. It is very big.
I collected it from January 1, 2008. My father gifted it when I was in Qatar. I love my hobby and it is a useful hobby too.
The stamp was first
introduced by an Englishman named
Sir. Roland Hill in 1840. The picture on the first stamp was Queen Victoria, who was the sovereign of England at that time.
The importance of trees
By Chathil Chanuka (Grade 5),
Republican Int. School,
Nuwara Eliya
Trees are one of the
valuable things in nature. Most of all living beings need trees for their living. They give shade to both man and animals. They
preserve water in the soil and prevent soil erosion. They provide food for us, they give medicines and timber to make furniture. They give us fuel too. Not only that, they also add beauty to the environment. Trees make the atmosphere clean and fresh.
People cut trees and
clear the land for
agricultural purposes and to make buildings. Because of that the animals in the forests will become
homeless. They will have no food to eat and we will not have fresh air to breathe. The whole environment will become dull and lifeless.
So it is our duty to plant more and more trees to make this world a better and healthier place to live.
