Sri Lankan shot ‘Ready’ in Colombo

‘Ready’ latest Bollywood movie starring Slaman Khan and shot in Sri Lanka last year will be screened at the Majestic cinema Colombo from June 3.

Directed by Anees Bazmee, the film was shot in Colombo and other parts of the country following the International Film Academy Awards (IIFA) in June 2010. The director and producers who had experienced the beauty of Sri Lanka changed its original location Mauritius to Sri Lanka.

This was also as a result of the request made by the film’s main star Salman Khan. While nearly 140 Indian crew worked in the film, a number of local line producers too joined the production group. Media report stated that the producers of ‘Ready’ Rajat Rawail and Kishan Kumar had said that Sri Lanka as a destination offers so much scope for filmmakers. The locations are breathtaking
Shooting of the film was also changed to Sri Lanka at a time when the South Indians protested against Bollywood actors coming to Sri Lanka for IIFA.

Having completed the film here, its main actor Salman Khan said he had no choice but to ignore the protests by the people of India who opposed his coming here for IIFA. He also said he hasn’t yet encountered any major obstacles regarding his latest film. He highlighted that the intention of them coming here is not political and that they want to complete their work peacefully.

Starring South Indian actress Asin opposite Salmaan Khan, “Ready” was shot in Sri Lanka for 30 days till the middle of July last year. “Sri Lanka is the perfect film location because they get everything they need from sandy shores to high mountains in almost the same location. This was the main reason for choosing Sri Lanka for this film from among many other countries which includedMauritius where the film was initially proposed to be shot,” and Salman added that it was easier to work in Sri Lanka because the culture of the to nations are similar in many aspects.

Ready revolves around Prem (Salman Khan) and Sanjanna (Asin) who fall in love amidst a twisted plot of greedy uncles who want to gulp down Sanjanna’s family inheritance and Prem’s crazy family who also form a part of their only son’s plans.

Comedy form essentially a part of the various schemes and conspiracies hatched by both parties who plan to teach each other a lesson. But what happen...

‘Ready’ also stars Paresh Rawal, Arya Babbar, and Mahesh Manjrekar in supporting roles while Ajay Devgan, Sanjay Dutt, Kangana Ranaut, Zarine Khan and Arbaaz Khan make guest appearances in the movie.

Twenty years in telescene

By Susitha R. Fernando

For twenty years after a slow but steady journey, the award winning teledrama director Chandana Hewapathirana has presented an unforgettable teledrama experience to the Sri Lankan audience.

Having undergone a tough training as an assistant director under experienced filmmakers and teledrama directors in the likes of Chandratante Mapaitigama, Sudath Devapriya and Jayalath Manoratne, Chandana ventured to miniscreen with ‘Hiri Bata Ahasa’ and went on to make eight direction which were completely different from each in story, theme, issues he handled and settings.

Yet there were some features common to all of them. They were entertaining, educational and timely. His tele direction ‘Hit Wicket’ talked about how parents force their children to play cricket while in ‘Sudu Hansayo’ he handled negative repercussion faced by couples when their parents forced them to proposed marriages. “The theme for teledrama has to be fresh and timely and it has to be presented in a lighter vein,” said director Chandana Hewapathirana. “I believe many a serious issue can be discussed meaningfully when it is presented in a satarical or comical manner,”.

In his latest directorial venture Chandana analyses a serious problem which has been overlooked by the entire public; the problem of garbage. Titled “Mehi Kunu Demima Thahanam” (Dumping Garbage here is prohibited) the teledrama hilariously narrates how each and everyone of us contribute to this problem yet points a finger only at the authorities and government institutions.

“Knowingly or unknowingly we all dump garbage on public places. We need to discipline ourselves and be determine to keep our country clean. The toffee wrapper or the bus ticket we throw on the road becomes a big problem to cleanliness in our country,” director Hewapathirana said.

These are simple issues which can be presented powerfully to attract audiences, he added. When inquired he said that the teledrama has become an art which is becoming unpopular among the audience in Sri Lanka, the experienced teledrama director said that bankruptcy of good directions is the main reason that the audience get away from the miniscreen.

However he also noted that there is hardly any recognition for good direction made by the many television channels and producers. The producers and TV channels require this to be a lucrative business rather than a form of art.

“In order to overcome this problem I have to become a part of the production in all the teledramas I directed. I even had to mortgage my land and property to do a teledrama. I do this because I can work independently and maintain a standard when I am the producer of my direction,” Chandana said.
“This is a problem in the cinema as well. Lack of good stories and screenplays is the biggest snag in our cinema today,” Chandana who is also preparing for his maiden film said.

“To state that people are not going to cinema is false, the fact is that there are no good productions with good stories for an audience to go to the cinemas. To make this happen a lot of hard work and time is required. By selling tickets at half rates only will not attract an audience but good stories to watch would make the difference,” Chandan elaborated on this crisis in cinema today.

Chandana who had taken more than two years to complete his teledrama says that there is no short cut to make a good art. Look at ‘Machan’, the internationally acclaimed story directed by an Italian filmmaker Uberto Pasolini. It was a story of how a group of youngsters were illegally smuggled to Europe. It was a hilarious and funny story produced with good screenplay and local filmmaker could have made that film.

Turkish cinema in town

Sri Lankan movie lovers have an opportunity to experience the beauty of Turkish cinema, with the first ever Turkish film festival now being held in Colombo.

The two-day festival to be held on May 28 and 29 (today) at the Russian Centre, Colombo-7 has four films done by well-known Turkish filmmakers and was organised by the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

Film Mutluluk (Bliss) directed by Turkish filmmaker Abdullah Oguz will be screened at 4.30 pm and 6.30 pm on May 29. The movie won prizes at the 2008 Turkish Film Festival in Nuremberg, the 2008 Miami International Film Festival and the 2007 Prix Odyssee Human Rights Award from the European Council.
The ephemeral Ozgu Namal puts in a powerfully nuanced performance as the young girl who was raped and then condemned to death by honour killing whilst Murat Han is uneasy as her star-crossed lover ordered her to perform the acts.

‘Issiz Adam’ (Alone) directed by Çagan Irmak will be screened at 7.30 pm and 9.30 pm on May 29. the film revolves around Alper, who is in his mid 30s and a good chef at his own restaurant. He loves luxury and spends his life with one-night stands and paid love. One day, his life changes utterly as he walks into a second-hand shop where he encounters Ada for the first time, who is in her late 20s and has a shop where she designs costumes for kids.

Lumet’s movies at AC

On the month of June, American Center will screen movies directed by Sidney Lumet starting with ‘12 Angry Men’ on June 7, 2011 at 6.00 p.m.

Directorial debut of Sidney Lumet’s remains a tense, atmospheric (though slightly manipulative and stagy) courtroom thriller, in which the viewer never sees a trial and the only action is verbal.

As the film opens, the seemingly open-and-shut trial of a young Puerto Rican accused of murdering his father with a knife has just concluded and the 12-man jury retires to their microscopic, sweltering quarters to decide the verdict. When the votes are counted, 11 men rule guilty, while one--played by Henry Fonda, again typecast as another liberal, truth-seeking hero--doubts the obvious.
