A three-day seminar aimed at sharing Sri Lanka’s experience in defeating terrorism will begin in Colombo on Tuesday.
Field commanders who took part in the humanitarian operation in the last stages of the war will share their experiences with an international audience. They will take questions from the delegates, relating to the humanitarian operations. “Everything is transparent and the media is at liberty to meet any of those contributors on the sidelines of the seminar,” Army Commander Lt. Gen. Jagath Jayasuriya told reporters at a news briefing held to announce details of the seminar.
The seminar will be attended by over 300 delegates from over 40 countries. The sessions would include discussions on various aspects of terrorism such as ‘global terrorism', as well as post-conflict reconciliation and resettlement, threats to national and international security from terrorism, effective counter mechanisms as well as re-evaluation of traditional approaches.
Among the speakers on the opening day of the seminar are External Affairs Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris, Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal and President’s Secretary Lalith Weeratunga.
The seminar will discuss understanding and sharing of knowledge on effective counter terrorism strategy, operational and tactical level lessons covering; intelligence, field engineering, medical and operating behind enemy lines, the role of human rights in counter insurgency operations, rehabilitation programmes to integrate ex-combatants into society and measures taken to mitigate factors that may lead to resurgence of violence, political reforms to accommodate all ethnic communities and nation building. |
