Funday Times - A Poem for the week

Refugee

By Rebecca Ratnam, Methodist College

Behind barbed wires
Bewildered you stand
Homeless, helpless,
Holding out your hand
For a morsel of food,
A drop of water
A rag to cover your nakedness
Your children cling to you
Terrified, crying,
Asking for their father
Your heart breaks
Your tears flow
Remembering the night you fled
Your home
The loved ones you lost,
The babe who died in your arms,
The pleading, the screaming,
The gunshots,
The warm blood
The burial with bare hands.

And still you wait
Behind barbed wires.
Your past in shambles,
Your present shrouded
Your future a mystery.
Is this your fate?
