More than 500 samanera Buddhist monks received upasampada or higher ordination under the auspices of the Sri Lanka Amarapura Maha Nikaya at the Sri Wimalaratnarama Vidyaniwasa Maha Pirivena Maha Vihara at Walpola, Ragama recently.
The samanera monks who were of different ages received the upasampada at the ceremony, different stages of which were captured by the Sunday Times photographer M.A.Pushpakumara. Higher ordination or upasampada is the acceptance of novice monks to the order of the Sangha.
