With over 16 models to choose from the Origin brand has become the trusted name of over 3000 customers since 1997. The Sunday Times Supplements Desk spoke to Mr. V.S. Suhitharan of Air Work International to find out more about their latest product offering.

"A dehumidifier is still a new concept to Sri Lanka but however internationally this has become a very popular device which is used in numerous industries around the world. A dehumidifier is better termed as an appliance that reduces the level of humidity in the air. This device uses the principle of Condensation Drying wherein, moisture from the air is extracted over an evaporator coil and collected into a storage tank with an auto sensor. The device also comes with an inbuilt hygrostat that senses the degree of humidity in the air and is ideal for home use as well as industrial use. We offer two types of dehumidifiers which are 'Novita' from Singapore and 'Aerial' from Germany. Currently we supply our products to Nestle as well as the Laxapana Power Station", says Mr. Suhitharan, Managing Director of Air Work International.
Humid air can cause mould and mildew to grow inside homes; these can cause various health risks. Also very high humidity levels can cause unpleasant situations for human beings such as condensation, making it difficult to dry laundry or to sleep. In addition to this high humidity levels also favour the rapid spread of insects, moths, fleas and humidity levels also have an effect on patients suffering from asthma, allergies and other respiratory conditions. Dehumidifiers prevent bacterial growth as most bacteria will not survive or multiply if kept below 50% Relative Humidity (RH). A dehumidifier helps eliminate bad and unpleasant smells and musty odors and also helps in the controlling of pests living in the air, bed clothes, wardrobes, cushions, pillows, sofa upholstery, chairs, drapes, rugs, changing rooms etc. This unique device prevents the discolouring of surfaces and stops dampness from occurring.
Dehumidifiers are also popularly used in numerous industries which include the pharmaceutical industry, food industry, and hospitals, spas, hotels, museums, libraries and archives etc. In the pharmaceutical industry, chemists face the common problems of decomposition and the difficulty in compression of tablets mainly due to the presence of high humidity in the air. Such problems can easily be overcome through the use of a dehumidifier.
In the food industry certain types of foods such as potato chips and cereals etc. exhibit an affinity to water when exposed to high humid conditions and therefore become soggy and unappetizing. A de-humidifier is an excellent answer to this problem.
Dehumidifiers are used in hospitals especially in operation theatres, laser machines and MRIs etc. in order to prevent damage to the imaging equipment and preventing infections from occurring and keeping patients comfortable.
This device is used in spas for Jacuzzis and other spa areas to prevent dampness, moisture problems, musty odors, peeling paint and foggy windows etc, from occurring.
The hotel industry makes use of this device in order to maintain a dry, crisp air in hotel surroundings and increase the comfort levels of its guests.
Museums, libraries and archives are highly prone to the growth of mold spores. Artifacts, paper and the adhesives found in book bindings are ideal breeding grounds for microbes. All these complications too can be combated with a powerful dehumidifier.
