Girl Guides with “Creative Hands”

In keeping with the slogan of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts – Girls Worldwide say “Discover your Potential” a Craft Day “Creative Hands” was organized by the Guide Branch of the Sri Lanka Girl Guides Association on Saturday August 6, 2011 at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute.

The Chief Guest was the Hon. Douglas Devananda, Minister of Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development and the Special Guest was well known craftswoman Mrs. Daisy Vittachi who conducted a workshop as well.

Girl Guides from the Central, Northern, North Western, Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces exhibited and demonstrated making traditional crafts of their provinces.

Some of the craft items were sold at the stalls handled by each of the provinces as a means of raising funds for the work of the provinces.

It was both a learning and sharing experience for Guides from around the country who participated on this day as they were not only able to showcase the talents hailing from their own province but were also provided with the opportunity to learn a new craft which would perhaps enable them to start their own home-based handicraft enterprise.

Mrs. Vittachi’s workshop on cross stitch was a favourite among the Guides while they also enjoyed making of soft toys which was demonstrated at one of the stalls.
