The Under 17 Division One inter-schools quarter finals will get underway from today with eight of the top teams contesting for a berth to the semi final. The eight teams to qualify are -- last year’s champions St Peter's, Runners-up Trinity, Royal, Wesley, Joseph Vaz, St Benedict's, St Benedict's and Maliyadeva.
All the matches in the quarter, semi and final will be played in coloured kits and white ball with first quarter final between St Sebastian's and Maliyadeva scheduled to be played at the CCC grounds today. The second quarter final will be between Trinity and St Benedict's tomorrow (Monday). The third quarter final clash will between Royal and Wesley on September 7 with last being between Joseph Vaz and defending champions St Peter's on September 8.
The teams to lose out in the pre-quarter finals are Royal Panadura, S. Thomas', Dharmasoka, Devananda, Lumbini MV, Thurstan, Prince of Wales and St Joseph's who underwent a shocking defeat to Joseph Vaz Wennappuwa. There will be a reserve day for all quarter and semi final encounters
The tournament saw the participation of 75 teams around the island which was played in the league format. 32 teams qualified to the second round which was divided into eight groups from which 16 teams qualified to the knockout stage.
The semi finals are scheduled to be played on September 16 and 19 with the final slotted to be played on September 25 which will also be played at the same venue. The tournament conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Association is sponsored by Elephant House.-MSA
