Rains for 3 months

A three month spell of inter-monsoonal rain starting next month will bring about heavy thunder showers in Sri Lanka, a meteorological official warned yesterday.

Meteorology Department Deputy Director M.D. Dayananda said the present rains were a result of a disturbance in the Bay of Bengal and the ending of the south-west monsoon.

He said the south-west monsoon usually got active towards its tailend and therefore there would be heavy rains till the end of this month in the Southern, Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces with strong winds in coastal and Central hill areas.

The official said lightning would be severe during the inter-monsoon period and people should be cautious.
