Biography of a bicycle
By Githmi Withanawasam (13 years),
Southlands College,
Galle
I was born in Germany.
One day came a child to our shop and he got me.
My master is very good. He doesn’t hurt me and I was very useful to him.
I am an eco-friendly vehicle because I don’t want any fuel. My master rides me when he goes to school, to classes and played with me.
My body parts are the seat, handles, brake handles, bell, tyres, pedals, bar, wheels and luggage carrier.
Someone who gets me doesn’t want much money because I was very cheap. Everybody says I am a ‘poor man’s vehicle’.
The tree that I like
By Dewshi Fernando (9 years),

Guava is my favourite tree. Guava fruit is my best fruit. There is a small guava tree in my garden. The season to bear fruits on these trees starts in the month of April. By the end of May, the fruits are ripe. I put water to my tree. When there is a lot of fruits in the trees it’s like green marbles.
One day I gave lots of fruits to my relations. My mother makes guava juice for us. It is very tasty.
Some people cut trees. It is very bad to our environment. We should plant trees in our garden. Otherwise
without trees our surroundings will be a desert. That’s why people are requesting not to cut trees.
My favourite author
By Jude Shannon Lucian (12 years),
St. Anthony’s College, Kandy
My favourite author is Enid Blyton. She was born in London, in East Dulwich, in 1897. She was the eldest of three children.
Enid Blyton was a trained
kindergarten teacher. She opened her own infants’ school and later devoted herself to writing. Her first published poem was ‘Have you…?’ written in 1917. In 1926, she was the editor for a children’s magazine. In 1930, her
stories started to attract a wider
audience.
In 1924, she got married and had two daughters, Gillian and Imogen.
Enid Blyton’s first children’s book, 'The Secret Island' was published in 1938. Her most famous series was The Famous Five, for readers between nine and thirteen; The Secret Seven for readers between eight and nine. She also wrote Adventure series, Mystery series and Barney Mystery books.
During World War II, Enid Blyton managed to get her work printed and made her name popular. She published over 600 children’s books during her 40 year career. Her final book was ‘Five Are Together Again’, which she wrote in 1963. She suffered from Alzheimer’s disease and died on November 28, 1968.
Endangered species in the world
By Samith Ailapperuma (12 years),
Trinity College, Kandy
Endangered species are species that are threatened with extinction. There are about 1000 endangered species. This number is increasing every year. Some of them are
rhinoceros, tigers, polar bears,
pandas, blue whales, cheetahs etc.
Every animal is important to nature. They maintain the balance in nature. The main reasons for the extinction of these species are destruction of habitats and
over-hunting.
About 25% of all mammals and 11% of all birds are endangered. Biologists think that most of these species will be extinct in another twenty years if people don’t try to
protect them. There are many
institutions which are trying to
protect these species.
In the last few centuries, species have become endangered due to
natural causes. Almost every
animal which lived in the ice age is now extinct.
Some animals have become extinct in the wild and live only in captivity. Some zoos have such animals with the hope of sending their young ones to the wild.
All endangered species are facing immediate danger of extinction. They need our protection in order to
survive.
