On June 28, 2009 I woke up early in the morning because it was my birthday. I was really excited to see a puppy standing in front of me. It had a short tail and very long ears.
Suddenly the lights went off. My mum and dad came into my room saying “Happy Birthday!” At that time I realized that the puppy standing in front of me was my birthday present.
I hugged my puppy very
happily.
My puppy and I went into the garden to play. My puppy was carrying a ball in his mouth. My mum and dad also came to play with us. I was really, really happy on that day and would love to have that day again.
A day I enjoyed during these holidays
By Hannah Ratnam (9 years),

August 13 was our Sunday School outing to a farm. Grunts, moos, squeals and a loud cock-a-doodle-doo, greeted us. It was like entering
Old MacDonald’s farm.
Pigs greedily shoved each other at the trough. A sow nursed her
squealing piglets. Gentle-eyed cows watched over their frisky calves. The funniest sight was the ducks, leading their brood as each duckling waddled where it pleased.
The geese hissed, stretched their long necks and
snapping beaks at us. The rabbits were cute but timid. The cocks and hens clucked and strutted about as if they owned the farm.
After a tasty farm-house lunch, we met ‘Seeya’, an interesting
storyteller, and with a scarecrow, we watched the harvesting of golden grain with sickles. I also saw a
bio-gas unit which supplies all the farm’s energy needs.
I am thankful for this day and the creatures great and small that made it special.
The best teacher I’ve had
By Binadi Almeida (Grade 3),

Aunty Nadika is the best teacher I’ve had. She was my first elocution teacher. Aunty Nadika is a very pleasant and kind teacher. She is very patient too.
My mom always tells me that I owe my reading skills to her. It seems that I was the only student in her class, who couldn’t pick up reading. So, she had asked my mom to get me a different reader – and had taught me very kindly and patiently to read. Even keeping me after class was over.
This is
something that I don’t remember – but thanks to Aunty Nadika –
I love reading today, and can read a lot of books by different authors.
Sadly for all of us who were her students, she had to go overseas. We were very sad when she left us. I still miss Aunty Nadika very much – and I always think of her with love because she was the best teacher I’ve had.
Sudoku

We find Sudoku in newspapers and magazines. It is a very
interesting activity for anybody. Now we find Sudoku in the
Funday Times and also in the Sunday Times.
My sister and I both love to
complete them as fast as we can. This activity is a very good exercise for our minds. We have to think a lot and use our reasoning power.
It improves our power of
concentration. The skills we derive from doing Sudoku could be helpful to do our other subjects in school, especially Maths and sports like Chess.
Sometimes, completing a Sudoku takes much time. But still you don’t feel like giving it up. You feel so happy when you complete it
successfully. I think doing a Sudoku could be an interesting pastime for all children. However more
opportunities should be available for us to get access to this enjoyable activity.
