Asanga Abeyagoonasekera was appointed as the Executive Director of the Lakshman Kadiragamar Institute for International Relations and Strategic Studies (LKIIRSS) effective 11th September 2011. Asanga who was once the youngest Chairman in the government sector was selected for the position under the patronage of Hon Minister of External Affairs Prof. G.L Peiris, the Chairman of LKIIRSS. The young academic who has significant experience and a number of accomplishments to his name will act as the ED of the Institute.

He was selected for the position to strengthen and develop the LKIIRSS while implementing innovative practices. Speaking about his new position Asanga says "I'm very glad to be appointed as the Executive Director at the LKIIRSS and I hope to present the way forward plan I've strategized within the next three months." Adding that, "My main focus is on three key areas including research on foreign policy, economic policy and security.
They will be the base of all that is planned for the institute. As the world of growing interdependence the need for rigorous and independent analysis is pivotal specially at a time of post war. As a nation that has learned from 26 years of terrorism there will be a lot we can share from our past experience in terms of security and reconciliation.
Today unlike the old school of diplomacy what we have is the 21st century state craft due to technological advances of Internet. We will provide a state of the art research environment and produce important papers on current important topics that will have an impact to our country and link with other reputed think tanks of the world. Ideas from a diverse group of people will be important when formulating our foreign policy. Our new strategic plan will focus on all these elements."
Starting his career in the private sector, Asanga has moved into the government service with the hope of contributing to his home country. The current Chairman of the Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Agency and the former Chairman of the Ceylon Fishery Harbours Corporation, Asanga was able to transform the fisheries sector in the nation through his dynamic leadership. He has made a name as a young leader who takes on the challenge to enhance organizations which are stagnated and creating a valuable source from them.
The Lakshman Kadiragamar Institute for International Relations and Strategic Studies is a Sri Lankan think tank relating to international affairs. Renamed in 2006, the institute provides the government with issues relating to formulating national policies on international relations as well as an institute that initiates forums and programmes for research and discussion on global and regional issues. |
