My trip to Horton Plains
By Dayan Samarasinghe (Grade 4),
S. Thomas’ College, Mt. Lavinia
We went to Horton Plains during my August school vacation. I went with my family. First we went to Nuwara Eliya. Then we left Nuwara Eliya at 6 a.m., the next day and reached Horton Plains by 8 a.m.
It was a very narrow and winding road to Horton Plains from Nuwara Eliya.
My father bought the tickets to enter Horton Plains. The weather
was very cold and misty. We walked
4 ½ km along the narrow path inside the Plains. We saw many flowers, bushes and trees that grow only in this area. We saw Purple-faced
monkeys with white beards and thick coats, also known as the bear monkey. I saw eight Samba deer eating dwarf bamboo trees.
It took two hours for us to walk from the entrance up to World’s End and back. I enjoyed my trip to Horton Plains as it was very educational.
My neighbourhood
By Thilini Maduwanthi (Grade 7),
Kingston College Int., Mutwal
I live in Mutwal. It is in Colombo. My house is large with three
bedrooms, a dining room, kitchen
with pantry, one bathroom and
another bedroom for visitors. There is a big lawn with flowers and a small pond with a fountain. My house is painted in blue.
The name of our street is
De la Salle Road. It is always noisy with auto rickshaws.
There are a few shops, an international school, a large playground, Elie House and the Thinakural newspapaper press. Fishmongers, vegetables sellers and the milkman come to the doorstep. Buses ply up and down. Most of my neighbours are Tamils and Sinhalese.
My neighbours are very helpful to us.
The neighbourhood is always very busy because it is on the Mattakkuliya Fort main road. There are many schools, a mosque, a
playground some stores and shops. There are many Muslims in my
neighbourhood.
My trip to South Africa
By Taibah Khalid (Grade 2),
Ladies College
For the April holidays, my family and I went to South Africa. We went by plane and landed at the Johannesburg Airport. From the airport, my uncle picked us up and drove us to his home in Durban.
In Durban we enjoyed
playing with our little cousins. We also went to the beach which was beautiful. One day we went to the Ushaka Marine World. There we saw the dolphin and seal shows.
From Durban, we flew to
Cape Town. Cape Town was very cold There was a
talking parrot in the hotel we stayed at. We visited game parks and saw lots of animals.
I really enjoyed my trip and was sad to leave South Africa.
My favourite toy
By Dulain Bamunusinghe (Grade 3),
Sussex College, Nugegoda
My favourite toy is a small car. The car goes, after inserting the key and pressing the button. I bought it from Arpico. The car is orange, white, grey and black in colour.
I always play with it and get scolded by my mother. My sister hides my car when she gets angry with me.
I keep the car under my pillow when I go to sleep. I took it to school to show it to my friends and all my friends liked it and asked to play with it.
It is like a valuable gem to me!
