Paradise Sri Lanka

By Sarindri De Silva (Grade 6), Musaeus College

In the Indian Ocean
Close to the equator
There is a beautiful island
In the shape of a tear.

Arabs called this Serendib
British called this Ceylon
I am sure you know this
country
And it is the paradise
Sri Lanka.

This is a lush green island
With resources everywhere
It is also known for lovely beaches
With golden sand which is rare.

This island has the world’s best tea
Precious gems and places to see
I am sure you will agree with me
Sri Lanka is a paradise
surrounded by the sea

My books

By Najwa Nalee (Grade 3), Muslim Ladies College, Colombo 4

I have some little books
I read them everyday
I curl up in a chair
And turn its pages slowly

Pictures, happy stories
Poems and puzzles too
Whenever I am lonely
My books are the friends for me!

Water a precious liquid

By Pasindu Eranga (Grade 6), Hejaaz Int. School, Mt. Lavinia

“Do not let a single drop of water flow into the sea without it being used.” This is how the great King Parakramabahu valued this precious liquid. Therefore he built tanks, lakes, river and reservoirs to protect water. It is true that we can live for days and days without food but not without water. Not only humans, animals and plants too require water for their growth.

Water is used for many purposes like washing, cooking and specially for producing hydro-electric power.
Three quarters of our earth is covered with water, but this amount is not enough for the increasing
population. Today we find a lot of water wasted. The policy makers should pay more attention to this.

We can conserve water by collecting rain water for watering plants and by using a bucket to wash cars.
Let us save water and remember not to waste it.

My favourite book

By Yohan Meegahage (Grade 6), Wesley College

My favourite book is ‘Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix’. This book is about wizards. The author is
J. K. Rowling. J. K. Rowling has written many books. I have read many of her books but I like ‘Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix’ the best. The main characters of this book are Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger.

In this book, Harry Potter is staying at his uncle’s house. One day he went for a walk with his cousin Dudley and on their way home, two Dementors came and attacked them. Dementors guard the wizard prison Azkaban. They suck the happiness from people. If they had a chance they would suck out a person’s soul.

The only way to repel a Dementor is to conjure a Patronus. But to conjure a Patronus you need to use magic. Harry was not allowed to use magic until his seventh year. But he conjured a patronus to save his and Dudley’s lives. For that he was nearly expelled from Hogwarts. He managed to convince the minister that the Dementors were after him.

The story goes on and at the end of the year Harry had to go back to his uncle’s home. This is a very interesting book.

Religious Festival

By Afzal Asudeen (12 years), Crescent Int. School

The Arabic word for festival is Id. It means the festival of breaking fasts. The end of Ramadan is marked by Id-ul-Fitr. It is a period of joy and celebration. Most people keep awake and spend the night in preparation to welcome the day of rejoicing. Special food like biriyani and watalappan are made for this festival.

Children get up early, take a bath, put on new clothes and visit the Masjid to join a congregational Id prayer. This prayer is usually held in open places so that thousands of Muslim men, women and
children may pray at a time. Children enjoy themselves visiting friends and relatives.
