New Year
By Vinotheeba Reginald (15 years),
Good Shepherd Convent, Kotahena
We have come to the end of 2011 and have stepped into the year 2012. Did we make the year 2011 anything special? If not, we can start thinking of making the New Year worthwhile.
First of all as school children, we should spend more time on studies. We should plan well before we start work, because planning saves a lot of effort.
We must avoid unnecessary excuses and learn to manage our time. We must always be happy with what we have. Opportunities are everywhere.
Children should reduce watching television for long hours and read more books, because reading helps our
imagination grow. We should
participate in extra-curricular
activities in school.
We must reduce eating junk food and have more homemade food. We should respect our parents and help them. We can help people who are not as fortunate as we are by sharing.
From this year we should make the habit of saving money, without
spending unnecessarily. Kids should spend more time with family and friends.
Above all we should thank God for all the blessings he has bestowed upon us and pray daily.
Hey kids, let’s work according to these resolutions and be a role model for others, because we are the future leaders.

My unforgettable trip
By Amal Gaffoor
(7 years),
Royal Institute Girls’ School, Havelock Town
My parents had promised my sister and me, that if we do well in our exams, they would give us a surprise. So we studied hard and both of us came first in class.
On the 17th of December, my father took us on a trip to Yala.
We got up early in the morning and went on the southern
highway. We went very fast and we passed the longest bridge in
Sri Lanka.
On the first day we stayed at Peacock Beach Hotel in Hambantota. We went to see the hot water wells and the Mahinda Rajapaksa Cricket Stadium. In the evening we went to the swimming pool and the beach.
The next morning, we left for Yala. My father had booked Chaaya Wild Hotel. After lunch, we went on the jungle safari. We bought the tickets and went in the jeep. We saw many animals like peacocks, monkeys, foxes, deer, elephants, crocodiles, wild pigs and a leopard. In the middle of the safari we stopped at the beach and rested. The beach safari was fun. When we returned back to the hotel, we went for a swim.
The next morning we packed our suitcases. Sadly we left the hotel.
It was an unforgettable trip to the wild Yala.
My favourite game
By Pavalachandran Arukshan (9 years),
S. Thomas’ College, Mt. Lavinia
Cricket is my
favourite game. It is one of the most popular sports in the world today. There are many reasons why I like cricket. It is a very fascinating game. It holds the attention of the spectators from
beginning to end.
It is a team game and it shows team spirit. We learn other moral values too. We learn to accept both victory and defeat alike. In a game of
cricket, we spend most of the time in the open air. This is good for our health.
I hope I will be a world famous cricketer when I grow up.
