Two to contest for BASL top post

Two prominent members of the legal profession will contest for the Presidency of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) at its election of office bearers to be held next month. They are UNP MP Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe P.C and Thirantha Walaliyadde P.C.

Mr. Rajapakshe submitted his nomination papers to Returning Officer Solicitor General Palitha Fernando PC., to contest the post of BASL president. The six proposers of Mr. Rajapakshe's candidature are Mr. Faisz Musthapha, PC, Mr. D.S. Wijesinghe, PC, Mr. Gamini Marapana, PC, Mr. S.A. Parathalingam, PC, Mr. Ikram Mohamed, PC and Mr. Manohara de Silva, PC, the seconders being Ms. Anoma Gunathilleke, Mr. Neville Abeyratne, Dr. Harsha Cabraal, PC, Mr. K. Neelakanda, Mr. Udaya Rohan de Silva, and Mrs. Chathurika Wijesinghe.

Thirantha Walaliyadde P.C. too will contest for the post of President. The proposers of his name are Suhada Gamlath P.C., Kapila Waidyaratna, Upul Jayasuriya, G.E.W.Gunaratna, Ravi Matugama and Saliya Peiris. Elections for office-bearers for the year 2012/2013 will be held on February 22.
