By M. Shamil Amit

Trinity recorded their fifth outright win in the ongoing Under 19 inter-school cricket season with a crushing innings and 61 runs win over St. Servatius Matara at Uyanwatte Stadium in Matara yesterday.
The foundation for the win was laid by skipper Niroshan Dickwella who made a quick-fire 112 in 79 balls which had 15 boundaries and a six.

Niroshan’s knock helped Trinity to finish day one on 191 for 2. This was after St. Servatius who took first lease of the wicket were shot out for just 141. Trinity resuming from their overnight score went for quick runs and were guided by an unbeaten 52 by Akila Jayasundara enabling them to make an imposing 308 for 7 declared.

St. Servatius batting the second time with a deficit of 167 runs, was struggling on 49 for 3 during the lunch break. Maliyadeva brought down the high riding St. Benedict’s side defeating them by four wickets at Kurunegala yesterday. The match was evenly poised when play ended on day one with the Bens making 150 and the Devans being restricted to 177. But the second day’s play turned in favour of the home team who had the visitors in deep trouble at lunch on 94 for 8.

The post lunch session saw the Bens being able to add only 14 runs being bowled out for 110 which left Devans a target of 84 runs for victory. But even then they underwent some anxious moments before coasting to their second win for the season.

Wesley registered a first inning win over Prince of Wales at Campbell Park yesterday. Wesley resuming from their overnight score of 81 for 2 made 224 in reply to the Cambrians 178. An unbeaten 100 by Lakshan Edirisinghe helped Zahira to record a first innings win over Nalanda at Maradana. Zahira after restricting the Nalandians to 196 on day one and resuming from their overnight score of 51 for 1, ended their innings by making 310 for 6.

The match between S. Thomas’ and Ananda ended in a tame draw at Mt. Lavinia. S. Thomas’ who held the upper hand on day one was denied an outright win by Thushara Samarakoon who made a dogged 128 in the second essay.

St. Peter’s was guided by a fine 153 by Shehan Fernando who helped them to amass 399 in the second innings after being bowled for 123 against St. Sebastian’s in the drawn encounter at Moratuwa.
Shehan’s knock comprised 19 boundaries and four sixes. Earlier in the day St. Sebastian’s resuming on their overnight score of 278 for 7 went on to make 310 for 8 declared.

Royal playing with a depleted side put in a fine performance against St. Joseph’s at Reid Avenue as they dominated the proceedings on both days in this drawn match.
