The first day of the Senior Table Tennis Nationals being worked at the Jagath Rajapakse International Stadium in Peradeniya provided few upsets.
Seeded player Nuwani Navodya (Dharmasoka) was beaten by Rushansi Wijekoon of the Air Force in the only turn up for the books.
Top seeded Rohan Sirisena, Nirmala Jayasinghe (number 2), Dinesh Deshapriya (number 3) and Indika Prasad (number 4) entered the quarter-finals.
Chalitha Rangana Seylan Bank), Malith Dinusha (Devananda), G.P.S. Sajith (Navy) and Sajith Kavinda also entered the last eight.
Sri Lanka’s undisputed women’s champion Ishara Madurangi, Ruhansi Wijekoon, Thejini Thushara, Junior National champion Ruwini Kannangara (Musaeus), Chandima Madushani (Mahamaya), Erandi Warusavithana (Dharmasoka), Umaya Tharaki (Dharmasoka), SUmaya Tharaki (Dharmasoka) and Kavindu Sahabandu (Holy Family Convent Kurunegala) were set to battle it out for honours in the Women’s quarter-finals.
Sri Jayawardenapura undergraduate Sukhita Wickremanayake and C.P. Liyanage (Air Force) who did well at the recent Ashok Melvani tournament, failed to reach the last eight in the men’s section.
