I had two pet
rabbits. One was Ginger and the other one was Micky.
Ginger was brown and Micky was black and white. They played with me in the
afternoon. They liked to eat carrots. They hopped and hopped in the garden.
One night a bad predator came into the hutch and killed them. I lost my poor pets.
I am so sad. My father said he will bring me new pets.

An unforgettable day
By Binadi Almeida (Grade 4),
Sujatha Vidyalaya
January 19, 2012 was a very
special day for me. It was the day that Sujatha Vidyalaya, my school – welcomed our little sisters of Grade One to school.
As always, a very special
welcome ceremony was organised. The chief guest on this occasion was Ms. S. Bandara, Assistant Directress of Primary Education. She was welcomed by the Eastern Band of the Primary Section.
It is also very special for me as I was chosen to announce, at this event. It was the first time that I was given an opportunity to be a part of the announcing team.
I was a little nervous at first – but my teachers’ encouraged me to do my best.
The ceremony started with the Pooja Dance followed by many items like dances and songs by the students. Our Principal and Managing Director then addressed the gathering. The ceremony ended with the Vote of Thanks.
I was very happy when my teachers said that I compered the show well. I look forward to
compering more such events in my school.
Droughts and famine
By Moneli Samarakkodi (Year 6),
Gateway College, Rajagiriya
A drought is a long period of dry weather, when no rain falls for weeks, months or even years. In poorer countries, a long drought often leads to a famine. A famine is when people don’t have enough to eat. During a famine, people get weaker and weaker, and get
diseases often as they are unable to fight them off. Children and
mothers’ starve and babies die as their mothers milk dries up.
Drought causes many problems. Rivers, lakes, reservoirs and wells dry up. Plants wither and die. The animals die. The soil becomes dry as dust, and is blown away in strong winds. The dry plants and bushes may catch fire. With no crops for food and no animals for meat and milk, people starve unless they get food from
somewhere else.
Are you beginning to have some idea of what it would be like to live in a place where there is a famine? So, my dear brothers and sisters please don’t waste food!
