We have heard our teachers and parents always speak about the value of having a proper education. We always hear this from our childhood. Elders know much more about the value of
education. Small children know only to play. If we spend more time on
playing we lose our
valuable time which we can devote for studies.
“Today’s child is
tomorrow’s citizen”, is the saying. If a child has a good education, he will have a bright future. He will surely rise up and go to the highest position in the future.
Even if you have wealth, that can be stolen or destroyed. But education is different. Nobody can steal it. This shows how
important education is.
If a person hasn’t a
proper education, he will have to do manual work and he hasn’t a good place in society. That is why we, from our childhood, should try to get a very good
education.
An unforgettable day in my life
By Udani Navaratne (12 years),
Mahamaya Girls’ College,
Kandy
That day I was excited as my friend Chethana invited me to spend that night at herplace, as her sister had gone somewhere. I went there in the evening. We played and had fun.
After dinner we slept. I could not sleep. I saw Chethana too was awake. She said she was hungry. So both of us tiptoed to the dining room. We opened the fridge. There were two pieces of chocolate cake.
We enjoyed eating the cake.
Suddenly Chethana pointed to a light shining towards the house.
The light beam came through the window. Then somebody was
shouting, “Mrs. Wijekoon”.
Chethana dragged me and ran to her room.
We heard the voice again. “Mrs. Wijekoon, open the door.” Chethana said we must tell her father. We went and woke her father and told him about the sound.
Mr. Wijekoon went and opened the front door. There stood their neighbour. She said that she heard a strange noise from the dining room. She had heard what we did in the dining room. We were dumb. We did not tell anything through fright. Next morning, quickly I went back to my home.

If I could be someone else
By Bhanuka Eranga (Grade 11),
Central College, Bandarawela
How exciting will it be if we see flying cars, underwater aeroplanes, fish walking and dogs singing.
Oh! You would be really excited. That is the day I became a magician.
Sometimes I wonder why fish only swim and don’t walk, why dogs howl instead of singing. Why can’t human beings fly? Why can’t cars go flying like planes ? Instead, I see cars go flying on roads and crash on things.
If I could become a magician, the whole world would be a paradise for children to live. The children would have schools only to play. There wouldn’t be any tiresome exams;
no tuition classes; no scoldings,
no report cards; no one would be there to harass us in our work.
Every child would live freely.
No starvation in the world; wars would come to an end; no hard
working to earn a living; parents would have more time to be with their children. The whole world would be a peaceful and calm place to live in.
Yeah! Wouldn’t you like to live in a world like this? No rules and regulations; everyone is free to sing, dance and play.
