A proud moment
By Binadi Almeida

Friday, March 9th was a very special day for me.
It was the day that my school – Sujatha Vidyalaya – had an ‘Induction of Prefects’ for the Primary Section. I too got the honour of serving
my school as a prefect.
It was a very happy and proud moment for me.
A very special and simple ceremony was organised by our school and parents.
Prof. Kusuma Karunarathne graced the occasion as our chief guest.
The proceedings began with observing pansil and singing of the National Anthem. The chief guest and other special invitees
then lit the oil lamp.
This was followed by the welcome speech. The badges were then pinned on to the prefects by the special invitees. This was followed by the pledging of the Oath of Allegiance.
I look forward to serving my school to the best of my ability.
The Sinhala and
Tamil New Year
By Januda Perera (7 years),
i-Gate College, Thalawathugoda
The New Year is celebrated in the month of April. In this month, people are busy cleaning houses and painting them. In this month
erabadu flowers will bloom and make the environment beautiful. The cuckoo bird
heralds the coming of the New Year.
At the auspicious time the Sinhalese go to the temple. Milk-rice is cooked after lighting the hearth at the auspicious time and we eat sweets like kokis, kevum, bananas and more. We get up early and wear new clothes. We give betel leaves to our parents and worship them. We visit our neighbours and relatives. We exchange gifts and it is a joyful time of year.
My best friend
By Shashini Bogoda (Grade 6),
St. Nicholas Int. College
A friend in need is a friend indeed. A true friend is a great boon
especially at present times when most of the people are selfish and
fair-weather friends. A true friend stands behind us even in times of need and difficulty.
I have many friends but my best friend is Ishini. She is a year younger than me. She is very good at her
studies. She is also the class monitor in our school. She respects and obeys her teachers and parents. She is also good at games and has won many prizes.
Ishini comes from a very good
family. She is the eldest and also has a sister and a brother. She has a noble aim and wants to become a scientist. She speaks English fluently and writes a good hand. She is a very good debater.
Ishini has a taste for music and singing. She has a very good voice and she is also the leader of the
Alto section in the Junior Choir.
I am proud to have a true and great friend like Ishini.

Value of reading
By Lakindu Matharaarachchi (Grade 4),
Royal Institute Int. School, Nugegoda
“Reading makes a
perfect man”. This means that reading improves our
knowledge. Reading improves our general knowledge and
educational knowledge as well. We have to learn reading from our
childhood.
There are many things that we can read. They are books, newspapers, magazines and also the
internet. Reading can
be done as a hobby.
By reading we can get to know the news in our world. My hobby is also reading books. In our
leisure time we have to read books to improve
our knowledge.
