We celebrate the New Year on April 13 this year. My mother makes sweets for the New Year. They are konda kevum, kokis, aluwa, asmi. She prepares milkrice on this day. We will visit our relatives and give presents to them.
People organize New Year celebrations. Children like to watch bicycle races. There are many games such as tug-of war, keeping the eye on the elephant, pillow fighting, sack races and climbing the grease pole. We like the New Year season very much.

The internet is the largest network of computers. Many of the computers all around the world are connected to each other through satellite telephone lines and cables.
Tim Berners-Lee, an English scientist known as the ‘Father of the Web’ invented internet in 1969 in California, USA. The network was named as ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network).
Through the internet we can play games, watch movies, listen to music, we can send and receive messages, chat with friends and can go online shopping etc.
To get connected to the internet you need the following things, a multimedia computer, a telephone connection, an ISP (Internet Service Provider), a modem (Modulator Demodulator) and a web browser.
WWW stands for World Wide Web. Email is called Electronic Mail and URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator.
A rainy day
By Shelina Yudhaselvan (Grade 4),
Kingston College Int., Mutwal
When I was returning from school, I noticed that the sky was getting ready to rain. Immediately the thunder and lightning and the rain started. When I looked through the window I noticed the people hurrying to go home. Some children were wearing raincoats.
Some people were carrying umbrellas. Some were waving for three-wheelers and some were hurrying for shelter near shops.
The roads and drainage systems were blocked with water. Because of the rain I saw a heavy traffic in the streets.
When I came home my mother gave me a cup of tea. I drank and enjoyed it. Because of the thunder and lightning the power failed for half an hour. My father returned home thoroughly wet.
I enjoyed this rainy day.
The dramas that made us happy
By Dewshi Kulathunga (8 years),
Musaeus College
We went to see the dramas as a trip from school. It was on Monday the 12th of March at the John De Silva Theatre. We walked into the theatre with our friends, hand in hand.
The dramas were, ‘Mang wage Mang’ and ‘Punchi Kumari’.
There were two reasons to be happy. The first one was that we enjoyed the dramas very much. The second was because we helped to improve the skills of the children who played in the dramas. They came from a far away village in our country. So the dramas made us very happy.

My puppy wriggles Wherever I go,
I start to giggle,
Sometimes she plays in the mud,
But I don’t mind,
My puppy is a
wonderful delight.
An unforgettable experience
By Dayan N. Samarasinghe (Grade 5) S. Thomas’ College, Mt. Lavinia
As a Cub Scout I was able to participate at the Jamboree in Dambulla this year. The Jamboree was held from the 1st to the 7th of April at the D. S. Senanayake School grounds in Dambulla. I participated at the Jamboree on the 1st and 2nd of April.
I left home on the 1st, with my parents at 6.30 a.m., and reached Dambulla at 11.30 a.m.
After I reached Hotel Suwahasa, I changed into my Cub Scout uniform and went for registration. Then I had lunch at the hotel and went to the Jamboree site with my fellow Cub Scouts. Our President Hon. Mahinda Rajapaksa came and gave a speech. After we returned to the hotel, we had a bath which I enjoyed the most. Next, we had a campfire. After dinner, we sang songs.
The next day, we went to the Jamboree site again and visited the stalls of the Chinese, Australian and Indonesian Scouts. Next we went to the Sigiriya Museum and the Golden Temple in Dambulla. After lunch at the hotel we returned back to Colombo. I am thankful to Sir. Baden Powell for founding Scouting.
