Peterite Walk in support of the College Chapel

The Old Boys’ Union of St. Peter's College, Colombo 4, is organizing the third Peterite Walk on Sunday, May 13, chiefly to raise funds for the renovation and refurbishment of the college chapel. This event is being supported by the Rector, Fr. Travis Gabriel, the Parent Teacher Association and the Welfare Society.

The day's proceedings will commence with mass concelebrated by the college's priest community and the old Peterite priest community, followed by the walk which will finish at the college grounds, where participants can enjoy a fun-filled day.

Special T-shirts and caps, which are being put out for the event, may be purchased from the college gym or from any OBU committee member. The walk is one of many projects organized by the OBU to support the college. The Organizing Committee also announced that the first substantial contribution, which has come from the Josephian-Peterite Alumni Association, Toronto, Canada was officially handed over to the Rector.

Fuad Jain of Kirullapone took oaths recently before Additional District Judge Colombo as an All Island Justice of the Peace. Mr. Jain is involved in the education of underprivileged children.

A member of many social bodies and sports organizations, he has served on the governing board of Wesley College. He is a product of Zahira College, Colombo, and son of the late Mr. and Mrs. K.M. Jain.

Dr. Goonatilake recognised for her work in Buddhism

Dr. Hema Goonatilake was recently awarded the Outstanding Women in Buddhism Award in recognition of her service to Buddhist women and the spread of the Dhamma.

Bhikkhuni Dr. Pannavati Karuna presented the award to Dr. Goonatilake at a ceremony in Bangkok, Thailand. The Outstanding Women in Buddhism Awards, sponsored by the United Nations Development Fund for Women, were instituted by Thai Bhikkhuni Rattanavali and American Bhikkhuni Dr. Lee.

Our Lady of Sorrows Church, Ja-Ela marks 2,000th Novena

Our Lady of Sorrows Church, Ja-Ela where every Friday large numbers gather, celebrates the 2,000th Novena of Our Lady of Sorrows on May 4. The first Novena was held by Fr. William Perera, OMI 40 years ago.

Next Friday, Holy Mass will be celebrated by Vicar Apostolate Fr. Patrick Perera and the Novena, beginning at 4.30 p.m., will be concelebrated by the Auxiliary Bishops of the Colombo Archdiocese, Rt. Rev. Dr. Maxwell Silva and Rt. Rev. Dr. Emmanuel Fernando, according to Parish Priest Fr. Gregory J. Fernando.

Reception for new Ambassador of Thailand

The Sri Lanka Thailand Society held a reception to welcome the new Ambassador of Thailand in Sri Lanka, Poldej Worachat and Mrs. Kanyarat Worachat. Here the President of the Society, Nirmalie Gunatilleke and Secretary Upali S. Jayasekera receive the Ambassador and Mrs. Worachat on arrival.
