Vesak festival is a religious festival. It comes in May. It is celebrated by Buddhists all over the world.
On this day all Buddhists go to the temple, offer flowers and worship Lord Buddha.
Most of the Buddhists observe sil. We make beautiful Vesak lanterns. We light the oil lamps and Vesak buckets. Houses are decorated with Buddhist flags and streamers. It is very beautiful in the night. People go to see the pandals. Lots of people go on pilgrimages. Small children are very happy.
I’m counting the days until Vesak comes.
My new toy
My Thiseni Kristhorubadu (11 years),
Musaeus College
I bought a new toy
A beautiful sailor boy
To my doll’s house
For my tiny toy mouse
The sailor boy
Can talk and walk
When I wind him
Just like a robot
I sewed him some new clothes
With golden thread and silver buttons
Then I put the suit on him
Wow! He looked handsome
Journey by train
By Raashid Jayman (11 years),

My family members and I went to Kurunegala by train. It was a Saturday. I woke up early in the morning at about 4 o’clock. My mother prepared some snacks and cool drinks. I had a wash and got ready.
We went to the railway station by bus. We arrived at the railway station. My father bought tickets and we sat on the bench until the train arrived. A train arrived and we got into the train. We ate the snacks that we had brought.
We saw nice sceneries. Lakes, rocks and paddyfields are some of what we saw. It was nice to see. I didn’t feel bored.
We arrived at the Kurunegala station at about 10.30 a.m. From there we got into a three wheeler and went to my aunt’s house.
That’s the enjoyable trip I went by train.
Let’s protect animals
By Akitha Waduressa
(Grade 4),

Animals are living creatures that are not plants. They include mammals, reptiles, birds, fish, amphibians and insects. Many animals help us. Some animals that help us are cows, bulls, elephants, hens, cocks and many, many more. These animals give us many things such as milk, eggs, fur, wool and some are kept as pets.
While these animals are helping us, some people kill them. These people don’t know how important animals are. Many animals are killed for their meat and many wild animals’ habitats are cut down and huge buildings and roads are made.
The most ridiculous thing is that some people kill animals for sport. That is why many animals are now extinct. Now, many animals are endangered, but still many people are ignorant of this.
We must protect animals before it is too late.
My trip to Polonnaruwa
By Thisuni Wimalagunaratne (Grade 3),
Visakha Vidyalaya
During this April holiday we went to Polonnaruwa. First we visited the Somawathie Dagaba. On our way we saw wild elephants.
The next day we visited the ancient kingdom in Polonnaruwa. There we saw the ancient dagabas and palaces. We also saw the statue of King Parakramabahu the Great. The tank built by him is beautiful.
I like to go to Polonnaruwa once again.
