A visit to the zoo
By Umair Shirazi (Grade 2),
Lyceum Int. School, Nugegoda
Last Sunday I went to the zoo with my family and my friend Altaf. As we entered the zoo, first we went to the aquarium. There we saw colourful fish. Then we saw the snakes. I saw carnivorous animals. They were roaring and eating flesh. We were very scared.
Beautiful birds with colourful feathers were chirping. Many kinds of monkeys too were swinging in their cages. We saw the elephants and then the sea-lion show, which was interesting.
Finally we saw the zebra, giraffe and the camel. We enjoyed our trip and returned home before the rain.
A funny person I know
By Thisura Perera (8 years),
Defence Services College,
Colombo 2
The most funny person I know is my grandfather, that is Mr. Austin Perera. He is always a very happy person. When I am sad he makes faces at me and makes me happy. When I cry he tells me funny stories that I can’t stay without laughing. He used to imitate the characters in his stories so that I can’t stay without laughing.
He calls me “Thisura the ‘Bada Pissa’” because I am the youngest in the family. When I am going to my grandfather’s house for the weekend, he surprises me putting various masks on his face which he has made himself. It makes me happy to see his mask faces and he wears it and dances in front of me.
The moment I go to my grandparent’s house there is no sadness, only joy. So, I am counting the days until I go to my grandparent’s house because the funniest person I know is my grandfather who
I love the most.

Our new library
By Rehan Perera (12 years),
St. Peter's College, Colombo 4
My school is St. Peter’s College. It is 90 years old. Our school consists of a Primary, Middle and Upper School. A new library was built this year. It is a luxurious and a very useful one.
It was declared open by a distinguished old boy of our school on February 1. He had come all the way from London to visit our college. He is a teacher in the London School of Commerce (LSC) and he has helped us in numerous ways to complete the library. So it is named as the ‘Andradi Library’.
We are proud of our school as it is a good school for boys to excel in studies. I am proud to say that I am a Peterite.

How I spent my school vacation
By Yenuka Liyanage
(Grade 6),
Royal College
During my school vacation, I went to Nuwara Eliya with my family members. My aunt, uncle and my
two cousins also joined us.
In Nuwara Eliya we stayed in a circuit bungalow. We saw beautiful flowers everywhere. It was very cold at night. We had heaters in our rooms.
I played a lot with my sister and my two cousins in the children’s park. When we were hungry, we ate fresh fruits. My mother bought fresh vegetables like carrots, beetroot and leeks grown there.
We went to see a tea factory, Haggala Gardens and Ambewela Farm. We walked along the streets very happily. We stayed in Nuwara Eliya for a few days and enjoyed our stay very much. My father promised to bring us to Nuwara Eliya next year too.
