Being a student of Royal International School, Kurunegala,
I am very proud to write about our unforgettable field trip to Polonnaruwa.
It was arranged by our Managing Directress and the staff. According to
the brochure we
visited several
places that have
educational,
historical and social
values.
On the way we had to pass Ibbagamuwa, Malsiripura, Gokarella, Gallewela, Dambulla, Habarana and through Minneriya and reached Polonnaruwa.Minneriya is a city which has a famous lake and also it is a town surrounded by endless greenish paddy fields.
After a short while, we reached Higurakgoda, CIC farm which has the biggest seed production in
Sri Lanka. It has almost 700 acres of seed paddy fields. The whole farm area other than paddy is
covered with perennial crops and livestock. They use modern
agricultural technology for their cultivations and always give
priority for the traditional
cultivation systems.
Before leaving the farm we all wrote down important facts of the agricultural system and we
hurried to Polonnaruwa. It is very famous for the three solid granite
statues. One is standing and one is Parinirvana Manchakaya.
The other is Samadhi Pilimaya.
The main
attraction goes to Galviharaya which is now known as Uththaramaya.
After seeing
all the historical
temples, we came to Parakrama Samudraya, which is known as the inland sea. When we came up to the bund we would see the huge water tank as far as my eye could see. We actually felt like we were on a sea beach.
The wind also was very rough just like a sea beach. We could hardly believe that it was a man-made lake. It was my most interesting place from the whole trip. Near the lake we visited the statue of Parakramabahu, who built the lake.
We reached the archaeological buildings which showed the
prosperous period of our history. The well arranged buildings
gave a clear idea of different
valuable things found around the city.
We were very proud to think that we were such a civilized nation long ago.On our way back we came to Minneriya National Park which is around Minneriya Lake.
This national park is the place where people could see wild
elephants coming to the lake for their bath. Other than elephants we could see deer, monkeys,
crocodiles, tortoise, water
buffaloes, birds and many more animals.
As it was getting dark, we had to leave the place since we had to reach Kurunegala. We sang songs with the teachers.
It was about three hours’ journey. It was
amazing and exciting. It was an unforgettable experience in my school life.
