A group of persons who value true humanity are engaged in a massive benevolent activity of releasing innocent milch cows destined for slaughter for several years. 700 such milch cows have already been released under the "Maliban Kiri abhayadana" programme.

As a 100 percent Sri Lankan corporate entity respecting Sri Lankan culture, the company has shown that it cares deeply about our society by introducing their CSR initiative of choice - the Maliban 'Abhayadana' programme which is also a model for other Sri Lankan corporates. In this initiative, a cow earmarked for slaughter is rescued by purchasing the animal and donating it to a needy farmer. It's a brilliant way of taking care of animal welfare and poverty alleviation at one and the same time.
The Maliban Milk Company has devised a programme to look after these milch cows destined for slaughter. The company takes measures to handover to low income families providing assistance for them to improve their economic standards. It has setup Maliban milk village in Bulathsingala in association with Bulathsingala Sri Siddhartha Foundation
These villagers have to look after milch cows released by the company. Under this project these villagers will be provided with necessary shelters for cows effluent discharge system and other infrastructure facilities. Monthly scholarships will be provided for talented children who excelled in studies.
The executive director of Bulathsingala Sri Siddhartha Foundation the venerable Nagalle Vajiragnana thero said that the intervention of a local company like Maliban Milk for a noble task such as protecting lives from slaughter, a noble benevolent activity preached in Buddhism was praiseworthy. . He added that the other business community should focus their attention for such benevolent activities.
The secretary of the Bulathsingala Sri Siddhartha Foundation Nihal J Ratnasiri said that his organization is fully committed to look after milch cows released by Maliban Milk Company. A separate programme is being implemented for the security of these animals. Measures have been taken to produce organic fertilizer and bio gas. A milk farmer is earning 1,500 to 2,000 rupees per day by selling milk, he said.
Maliban Milk Company is taking measures to setup another milk village in Payagala. Maliban milk produced from 100 percent pure cow's milk has become popular among Sri Lankan consumers. The Chief Executive Officer of Maliban Milk Lakshman Weerasinghe said that the programme of releasing cows destined for slaughter is now being further expanded. "This Maliban Kiri promotion programme has had unprecedented support from consumers and this speaks volumes about the trust that consumers have about Maliban Milk Company and Maliban Kiri quality of which is made from 100% fresh cows' milk," .
He also said that because of the success of the Maliban Milk promotion programme, they are now able to expand their premier CSR project, Maliban "Abhayadana" campaign so that more milch cows can be saved from slaughter. The blessings from these kind deeds will not only come on the company but also upon our consumers and the company is thankful to them for their support, he added.
Marketing Manager of the company Malinda Siriwardena said that this abhayadana project has become a programme of uplifting the living standards of low income families. These cows supply 150,000 liters of milk per month. The company hopes to release the 1,000th milch cow next year, he said.
The promotion consultant of Maliban Milk veteran media personnel Ariyasiri Withanage said that this programme has received the appreciation of all Sri Lankans. He disclosed that arrangements have been made to telecast this programme live over Independent Television Network in every poya day and TNL television 11.30 am. |
