Scouting Centenary
By Rashvin Senanayake (9 years), British School in Colombo

This year marks the scout centenary. Scouting was started in 1912 in Sri Lanka by a planter named Francis George Stevenson. The first scouting group was started in Christ Church College, Matale.

There are close to 45,000 scouts in Sri Lanka. A scout Jamboree was also held to mark the centenary in Dambulla in April, with 27 countries taking part and with 15,000 international scouts. A special stamp and coin was also issued.

A centenary walk was also organized on February 2012 and our school cub scouts also took part.
I had lots of fun on the walk! We sang songs and made rhymes. We will also be having our Cub Scout camp in June and it will be a lot of fun. We have a good time being scouts!

A visit to the railway station

By Oshadha Balasuriya (10 years), D. S. Senanayake College, Colombo

During the last school vacation we went to the Fort Railway Station. Mother took me because I wanted to see the trains.

It was a Saturday. We left home at about 8.30 a.m. We were at the railway station by 10 a.m.
We went to Platform No. 1, We waited there till the trains arrived. For about half an hour a train didn’t come to Platform 1, but we saw so many trains that stopped on the other platforms. All those were
passenger trains. They were going to Kandy, Galle, Matara, Jaffna and Badulla.

Ammi and I were very thirsty so we had some soft drinks. We waited there for about two hours. I was very happy as I saw a lot of trains. We returned home at about 1 p.m. I am very thankful to my mother for taking me to see the trains. She promised to take me to see the trains again if I study well.

Trees

By Ruwanya Athukorala (10 years), Colombo 3

Trees help us in various types of ways. They give us shelter, food, clean air and beauty. In autumn the leaves change colour and fall. If people cut down trees it will create floods.

Animals rely on trees for food and shelter. People use trees to build their houses. It is our duty to grow trees.

Gifted Trip

By Hasna Muthaliff (10 years), Lyceum Int. School, Nugegoda

April 28th was a fabulous day for me! It is a day on which my family and I were ready to set off for a trip to Wijeya Holiday Resort at Kiriella, Ingiriya. While travelling, I saw paddyfields, rubber trees,
mountains and also the Sunquick and Sunrich factories on the way. We reached our destination at about 11.45 a.m., and had a cool swim in the icy water. Next we ate a delicious lunch.

Then we had a small rest in our room and went to explore the resort. We saw a waterfall, birds, rivers and tree-houses. They were beautiful and natural. We enjoyed the playground, bouncers,
swimming pool and outdoor activities such as badminton and netball.

We stayed one night and left after lunch. It was sad to leave but we had no choice since my school was starting on May 2nd. So with a sad heart I left. I will never forget this gifted trip given to me by my dear, best parents. Thank you very much to my parents!

My hobby

By Raashid Jayman (11 years), Wesley College

My hobby is collecting stamps. I have two albums. One is for Sri Lankan stamps and the other is for foreign stamps. There are many stamps with birds, animals, people and nature.

It is very interesting to collect stamps. I get stamps from letters and greeting cards. I mostly get stamps from letters.

I learn many things about stamps. I have stamps from many different countries. I daily look at my stamp album with my brother after coming home from school. It’s very colourful and nice to look at. I like my hobby so much.
