A fighting century by Ben Hollioke (103) gave England ‘A’ a score of 260 in reply to Sri Lanka A’s first innings total of 171. The Englishmen got a lead of 89 runs at stumps on the second day in the second unofficial cricket Test being played at the Uyanwatte Stadium at Matara.
Ben Hollioke, who has played only one Test and a single limited over international for England, hit the best innings of his life to steer his team out of trouble.
Ashley Giles, partnered him in an eighth wicket stand of 97 runs in 143 minutes. Hollioake played some magnificient shots that pleased the limited crowd at the stadium.
In his almost four hour stay at the crease Hollioake hit two sixes and nine fours. His second six, off Arshad Junaid over wide long-on, brought him a well deserved hundred, but Junaid had his revenge in the next delivery.
Having lost the first seven wickets for just 122 runs, the eighth wicket pair fought back. They went after the bowling. The fielding was poor.
Giles who took 4 for 52 on Friday, proved that he could bat too. He hit four fours in his 104 ball knock. He was dropped on 38 by Avishka Gunawardena at gully off Hemantha Boteju, four overs after the second new ball was taken. However he was trapped leg before, two overs later.
