Sri Lanka crumbles but Aravinda redeems prideLORDS (Saturday) - The mighty cricket atoms of the sub-continent India's Sachin Tendulkar and Sri Lanka's Aravinda de Silva set this home of world cricket alive today with a spectacular partnership that carried the Rest of the World XI to a thumping victory over an all star MCC team in a Diana Memorial International watched by some 35,000 people. Responding to the MCC team's score of 262 for 4 in their 50 overs, the Rest of the World at one stage were struggling at 54 for 2 in 12 overs, but when De Silva joined Tendulkar, the stage was set for one of the most scintilatting batting displays by two of the world's greatest batsmen. Tendulkar slammed 125 with 12 fours and three sixes while Aravinda gave him brilliant support in their match winning 177 runs stand for the third wicket before the sky-rocketing Tendulkar was bowled by Indian team-mate Anil Kumble. By then a victory target was within easy reach for the Rest of the World and De Silva led the assault with his innings of 82 which more than made up for the failure of his team mate, Sanath Jayasuriya, who was dismissed for eight. Aravinda's explosive 82 in this widely awaited match for the W.G.Grace Trophy also made amends for Sri Lanka's shocking debacle in their three-day match against Glamorgan at Cardiff yesterday where the tourists crumbled to one of their lowest ever scores of 54 all out. Finally the World XI reached the victory target of 262 in 43.4 overs with six wickets to spare. Will the Board agree to Roshan's request?Marlon FernandopulleEngland tour discard Roshan Mahanama has requested for two months' leave from the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka. Roshan Mahanama like all the other Lankan cricketers have signed a contract with the Cricket Board which entitles them to lucrative monthly payments ranging from US dollars 1000 to 2000. The contract entails the cricketers to be available for selection to National sides during this period. According to informed sources Mahanama's request is very likely to be rejected. However the Cricket Board along with the selection committee were meeting last night to take a final decision on his request. If the cricket Board accedes to Mahanama's request the world record breaking batsman will not be considered for September's Commonwealth Games. Roshan's chances of making it to England for the Triangular would also be out if he opts for two months leave. On the contrary if Mahanama's request is rejected the right hander may be drafted into the Sri Lanka A side to pad up against South Africa A. In another development three promising fast bowlers were having their bowling actions scrutinised by a panel of Umpires after the National Selectors alleged that the bowlers were throwing. The action of the three bowlers were videoed and closely watched by the special committee comprising umpires B C Cooray, Udaya Wickremasinghe, T M Samarasinghe, D N Pathirana and Asoka de Silva. After watching i t closely the umpires are expected to take a final decision on each bowler's action.
