Akram becomes Pakistan's top wicket takerNEW DELHI, Saturday - Wasim Akram became Pakistan's leading wicket taker in tests on Saturday but was unable to prevent India from tightening their grip on the second Test. India, boasting a first innings lead of 80, were 324 for seven in their second innings at the close of the third day. Akram took his tally of wickets to 363, surpassing Imran Khan's 362, when he dismissed Mohammad Azharuddin and Nayan Mongia with successive deliveries in the first over of a new spell to lead a brief Pakistani fightback after lunch. He bowled Azharuddin for 14 and trapped Mongia leg before for nought to leave India 199 for six. But an unbroken 93-run stand for the eighth wicket between Saurav Ganguly and Javagal Srinath dashed Pakistan's hopes of being able to chase a target below 300. Ganguly, unbeaten on 58 with six fours and two sixes, and Srinath, who has made 44, carried on the good work of opener Sadagopan Ramesh, top scorer with 96. He and Rahul Dravid took their second wicket stand to 85 after India had begun the day on 46 for one. Dravid fell for 29, top-edging an attempted pull off Saqlain Mushtaq to Ijaz Ahmed. Pakistan's best spell of the day began with the dismissal of Sachin Tendulkar for 29, leaving India on 168 for three. India India second innings- (overnight 46-1) - 324 for 7 in 109 overs (S. Rover pinpoints…Why no second squad? The present Exco of the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka in their 9th month in office has spent a sum of Rs. 189 million on the development of cricket Rover learns. What development without a second squad which means no development at all, with no infrastructure to work on? No securityThe Rupavahini Corporation which has been approached by Singers to give live commentaries on the Royal/Thomian Cricket match at the SSC grounds, has turned down the request asking for 100 percent security. This has been done since a group of spectators both young and old boys nearly damaged their cameras whilst in high spirits when they last covered the big match. Heard this?A commentator from a leading radio station in Sri Lanka stated that a bowler had stumped Romesh Kaluwitharana in a run-out. He was earlier heard in another sports programme stating that there was a rumour that Arjuna Ranatunga was fined and suspended. Are rumours also played up in this fashion? The last laughNimal Lewke, the current coach of the Sri Lankan rugby side for the Hongkong Sevens later this month, had the last laugh a fortnight ago. Why? A member of the Rugby Union's Council who unsuccessfully tried to create a misconception to subvert his (Lewke's) appointment, is now facing embarrassment. Acting as a torch bearer for some club official, this Council member had earlier told the Council that Lewke will not be accepted by players from a certain club. But when Lewke met the Sri Lankan poolists for a first training session the players from this club pledged their fullest corporation. You can't keep a good man down! Playing ballBy the way Rover learns that a rugby referee had gone behind a certain coach begging to be recommended as the assistant coach of the Sri Lanka side. When life is hard on one front, some people look for other avenues!

Lanka face Aussies todayAfter the morale-boosting, spine-tingling win over England at the SCG the morale of the Sri Lanka team is very high, when they take on Australia at The M.C.G. (Melbourne), today. Manager Ranjit Fernando told the Sunday Times "every match is an international and we are determined to give the Aussies a run". He added, "Aravinda de Silva's batting helped the team immensely at the SCG, a repeat performance could make a tremendous impact to the batting. We have not decided on the team composition. "Murali" playing in this final game too is in doubt. Thilan Samaraweera, impressed at the SCG with his off spinners. A look at the pitch will decide on the bowlers." Though Sri Lanka, is out of the final the Lankan supporters will be in their numbers to cheer them. The team returns home on (Monday Feb. 8) morning and reach KIA late night on the same day. The MCG pitch, too has lift and bounse. McGrath, should exploit and needs watching as the Lankan batsmen are vulnerable. Merely, a long rest is not the answer. Were there any other Lankan cricketers who had similar injuries? Yes, Chaminda Vaas and Manjula Munasinghe, who were put right by me. They were in a rehabilitation unit here. Soysa's injury needs similar care. He should not be rushed into the game, but there should be a permanent remedy, he added. Otherwise he will be lost to cricket. Who is the best qualified to attend on him in Sri Lanka? Without doubt, Dr. C. Thurairaja, who is highly qualified in this subject. Any comments about Jayasuriya's injury? Well, he needs, four weeks to be healed. Then he should quietly get into the game, but not rushed into the international scene. Your manager, Ranjit Fernando, highly commended Dr. Kannangara's expertise on sports medicine. He was an asset to the boys - a big "thank you" to him. Dr. Kannangara who is an old Royalist, but wishes not to lean to any specific school ties, thereby creating an impartial climate amongst all Sri Lankans.
