Marvan dazzles as Lanka take control

BULAWAYO, Zimbabwe, Saturday (Reuters) - Sri Lankan Marvan Atapattu's bid for a double century in the opening Test against Zimbabwe was frustrated by torrential rain on Saturday.

Atapattu's masterly innings of 178 not out was halted 50 minutes after lunch when a storm flooded the outfield and washed out the rest of the third day.

The opener had been at the crease for 493 minutes, faced 364 balls and hit 22 fours.

Sri Lanka were 358 for six, 72 ahead on first innings.

Just two wickets fell after Sri Lanka resumed at 232 for four.

In the day's third over, Romesh Kaluwitharana chased a leg-side delivery from fast bowler Henry Olonga and was caught behind off the back of his bat for 30 by wicketkeeper Andy Flower. The dismissal ended a fifth wicket stand of 79. Atapattu and debutant Indika de Saram then exposed the limitations of the Zimbabwe attack in adding 107 for the sixth wicket with careful batting on the sound pitch.

The partnership ended when De Saram was caught behind for 39 off seamer Gary Brent.
