BLUE

The '100 Word' page on 'Blue' appears this week. We would like to remind our contributors to please remember the rule of the 100 word limit, as it is vital within the framework of this page. Two very good contributions could not be published this week, simply because that rule was not kept in mind. The theme for next month is "Moon". Please send in your contributions by December 18, 1999, to: Madhubashini Rathayake, C/o, The Sunday Times, W.A.D. Ramanayake Mw., Colombo.

Blue

Wassily Kadinsky said
blue is the most celestial of all colours
and painted a blue rider
on a white horse;
the meadow is flecked with pale blue flowers
forget-me-nots?
and edged by a brook that reflects
a transparent azure sky.

The horse and rider cast one deep blue shadow
as they ride and ride,
on forever through the meadow flecked with forget-me-nots to an indeterminate horizon
gallop....gallop....gallop....

Blue survival

Blue providence
Enfolds a blue planet.
Stillness is broken
As blue meets blue
In the blurring dash
Of the blue kingfisher,
When it strikes
The dazzling blue lake.
Waters ripple
An opening for the king of fishers.
He comes,
Blue as the sinking feeling
In the core of his
Little blue heart.
Cold hunger
Within his little blue nest.
He must search again
In the sparkling waters
Of another blue lake...

Baby blue

It was a son
And everything was in baby blue.
Blue cot
Soft blue pillows
Blue ribbons on little blue coats
Blue mosqutio nets.
She felt golden
With joy and fulfilment
She was a mother - at last.
A sweet cooing baby boy.
Years and years and years
Have passed.
She feels blue today.
She - swinging
On a blue rocking chair
In a luxurious -
Home for Elders!

Now

Faded tie
Hanging on the clothes rack,
Hidden away...
Blue and white.
Stripe after stripe.
School days come to mind,
When I wore the old tie
Day in, day out.
Spruced up and ironed
For occasions.
Lovingly handled.
Faded old tie-
Blue and white.
Stripe after stripe.
Forgotten behind the dress - Blue dress...
Sophisticated - and new.

Big brother Blue

Blue on the videos
Blue on TV.
Children, be good, watch Discovery.
Friends talk Blue, teachers too.
"Change will do student's theory.
Women wear Blue, imparting Blue.
Can't Prema's new look dandy?
Big brother Blue is blowing his horn,
- either that or got my glasses on wrong
Blue sunglasses - got 'em in Kandy.

Blue on blue

An early walk on the sands, my shadow shading the deep impressions left by transient feet. The women - thin, burned black, holding aloft a flimsy wrap. Its rippling folds shimmering oyster, azure, ultramarine.

The price was high. She twisted her lips in shy regret, but the wrap entwined me in its strings, pleading for release. Relenting, I nodded, handing her the bright orange notes.

Our hands met, but the cloth evaded my grasp. Catching the breeze, it flew to the topmost height of a coconut palm. It fluttered in freedom, reflecting the sapphire sky, unattainably blue.

Blue in a painter's eye

The purplish blue of twilight
yields to a milky blue haze...
Cobweb clouds veil the moon,
casting shadows on grey-blue grass.

Sinuously the river moves,
a blue-black snake
in the wilderness that leads
to the blue-green sea.

The leaves and fronds of trees
quiver and gleam in silvery blue....
But the undergrowth
is a midnight hue

Only a painter's inward eye
could see the myriad
shades of blue imprisoned
in that elusive light,

Until the ethereal blue of sea and sky
are swallowed
by the blinding night
of a desolate lunar landscape.

Love letter

I want to
Write to you
A love letter

In a nice light blue
Fragrant
Notepaper.

In delicate
Small blue letters
To pour out my heart
My infinitely suffering
Infinitely delicate
Heart
Which you say
Is like a
Tiny Blue Bell
Which you say
You love so much.
