Rain abandons one dayerBulawayo, Saturday (Reuters) - The first one day international match of the five match serries between Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka was abandoned due to heavy rain at Bulawayo on Saturday Chasing Sri Lanka's imposing total of 285 to win in 50 overs the home team reached 65 for 1 in the 15th over before rain took the players into the pavilion. Earlier three half centuries and steady scoring down the order took Sri Lanka to an imposing 284 for nine in their alloted 50 overs. Openers Sanath Jayasuriya and Romesh Kaluwitharana scored 54 each, while Russel Arnold made 56. Jayasuriya's innings was the most impressive, coming off 44 balls and including six fours and three sixes, two of them driven high over cover. The touring team launched their innings in fine style with an aggressive stand of 96 between captain Jayasuria and Kaluwi-tharana. It ended in the 13th over when Jayasuriya skied a ball from seamer Gary Brent to Guy Whittall at square leg. The other major partnership of the innings was between Arnold and Tillekaratne Dilshan, who scored 35. They shared 71 for the fifth wicket. Dilshan was out in the 43rd over, expertly stumped down the leg side by wicketkeeper Andy Flower off Brent who finished with four for 53. The second one day international match between the two countries will be played today at the same venue. Saunders soccer kingsBy Nadarajah GokulanSaunders emerged Bristol League 1998-99 Division One champions when they toppled Ratnams 2-0 in the final worked off at the Sugathadasa Stadium under floodlights last night. At the breather Saunders led 1-0. Saunders had their supporters jumping high when J.P.C. Karunaratne netted in the first goal in the 18th minute of the first half. Navin upsetsBy Ravi NagahawatteSeventeen-year-old school boy Navin Samarasinghe marveled the sparse squash audience at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium when he toppled the experienced Duminda Wijedasa to reach the final of the Men's Open at the National Squash Championships. Top seeded Samarasinghe who was both fast and agile in his stroke play had Wijedasa in check after a closely fought first game to finally win by three games to four. Samarasinghe beat Wijedasa 7/9, 9/7, 10/9, 9/4. Thuhashini triumphantThuhashini Selvaratnam, Sri Lanka's golf queen returned to the island last week after winning the 12th Chinese Open Amateur Championship. |
