Marginal increase in volumes at Colombo Tea auction

The Ceylon Tea auction in Colombo saw a marginal increase in volumes totaling 5.4 million kg this week.

There was fair demand mostly at firm to easier rates, Forbes and Walkers Market report for this week stated adding that the unsold volumes recorded an increase and totalled around 22 per cent.

Ex-Estate offerings were similar to the last auction and totalled 0.71 million kg while the overall quality of offerings were barely maintained.

Best Western BOP/BOPFs declined Rs.50 per kg and more following quality. In the Below Best and Plainer categories, better BOP’s declined Rs.50-80 per kg and more, whilst the corresponding BOPF’s were firm and up by Rs.50 per kg and more, whilst the corresponding BOPF’s which were firm and up by Rs.50 per kg dearer at the commencement of the sale, were barely steady by the close.

Nuwara Eliya BOP’s were Rs.100-200 per kg lower, while the corresponding BOPF’s declined by Rs.50 per kg, on average. Uda Pussellawa – Better BOP’s were sharply lower while the others sold around last week’s levels.

Uva BOP’s declined by Rs.100 per kg and more, while the corresponding BOPF’s declined by Rs.50 per kg and more.

High and Medium Grown CTC teas – High Grown BP1’s had hardly any offerings, while the Mid Grown types were firm and Rs.50-100 per kg dearer.

Shippers to the CIS operated on a wide cross section of the offerings. There was fair activity from South Africa and Japan, while the UK and the continent remained selective. (SD)
