The government is to introduce a fresh VAT Amendment Draft Bill soon granting some concessions for retail traders following the Supreme Court decision to nullify the previous one, official sources revealed.
The proposal to impose 15 per cent VAT will not be changed and no directive has been issued by the Finance Minister to include the SLFP proposals amending the previous bill, a senior official of the Finance Ministry disclosed.
He noted that the 15 per cent VAT will be enforced with retrospective effect. The new VAT Amendment Draft Bill will be presented to the Cabinet for its approval and then to Parliament following proper procedures, he said adding that Treasury officials are devising the bill at present before sending it to the Legal Draftsman.
